Pilates, originally called Contrology, was devised by German born Joseph Pilates as a method of maintaining and improving health and fitness while he was interned during World War One.
The true definition of Pilates as defined by Joseph in his book ‘Return to life through Contrology’ presents his method as the art of controlled movements which should look and feel like a workout, when properly manifested. If practiced with consistency, Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength, and develops control and endurance in the entire body.
Pilates believed that mental and physical health were closely connected, stating that ‘Contrology is complete co-ordination of body, mind and spirit’ so the programme is perfect for correcting wrong posture, lengthening, and strengthening the muscles, restoring vitality and invigorating the mind. In other words, ideal for improving general fitness and well-being with functional exercises, which develop the body holistically. Exercises are performed on a mat (or can involve the use of specialist equipment) and can be modified and adapted to suit people of all ages and levels of ability and fitness, from complete beginners to elite athletes!
